Autogate Ltd Safe, Secure and Seamless Gate Automation for Homes and Businesses

A well-designed gate system does far more than mark the boundary of your property. It shapes first impressions, enhances security, streamlines access, and adds value. Autogate Ltd specialises in automatic gates that combine engineering reliability with elegant design, giving homeowners and commercial sites a smooth, safe and stylish way to manage entry.

Whether you need a compact solution for a tight driveway or a robust commercial gate with integrated access control, this guide explains the options, safety standards, installation process and ongoing care that set professional gate automation apart.

Why Choose Automatic Gates?

  • Security with convenience: Motor-held locking and controlled entry deter opportunistic access while allowing effortless arrival.
  • Kerb appeal: A correctly proportioned gate elevates the façade and complements architecture.
  • Traffic flow: For multi-occupancy or commercial premises, automation eliminates bottlenecks at peak times.
  • Privacy: Controlled access and optional screening panels keep your frontage discreet.
  • Value: Quality systems add perceived value and reduce wear from manual handling.

Gate Types: Finding the Right Fit

Autogate Ltd designs and installs systems to suit space, ground conditions and usage.

1) Swing Gates

Two leaves (or a single leaf) pivot on hinges.

  • Best for: Driveways with level swing arcs and adequate space.
  • Pros: Classic look, quiet operation, simple mechanism.
  • Consider: Requires clear space to open; wind loading on solid infill should be assessed.

2) Sliding Gates

A single leaf slides across the opening on a track or is cantilevered (no ground track).

  • Best for: Short or sloped driveways, heavy-duty and commercial use.
  • Pros: Secure, stable in wind, excellent for wide entrances.
  • Consider: Needs space along the boundary for the gate to slide.

3) Bi-Folding / Speed Gates

Leaves fold in the centre to reduce the required swing arc.

  • Best for: Tight forecourts and high-throughput sites.
  • Pros: Fast opening and closing cycles; minimal footprint.
  • Consider: More complex hardware—professional commissioning is essential.

Materials & Finishes: Choose galvanised and powder-coated steel for durability, aluminium for low maintenance, or hardwood for a premium, natural finish. Infill options—vertical bars, composite boards, slatted timber or solid panels—tailor privacy and airflow.

Smart Control & Access Options

Modern gate automation is as much about intelligent control as mechanical motion. Autogate Ltd configures:

  • Remote transmitters & keypads for everyday convenience.
  • Proximity cards & fobs for managed access.
  • GSM/4G intercoms to answer from your mobile anywhere.
  • Video intercoms with Wi-Fi apps for visual verification.
  • ANPR (number-plate recognition) and RFID for commercial vehicle control.
  • Smart home integration (e.g., app, voice assistant, geofencing).
  • Time schedules & event logs to manage staff, contractors or deliveries.

Safety First — Compliance You Can Trust

Automated gates are powerful machines and must be designed, installed and maintained to UK and European safety standards. Autogate Ltd follows best practice for safe operation:

  • EN 12453 & EN 12604 compliance on forces, edges and construction.
  • Primary and secondary safety devices such as photocells, safety edges, light curtains and controlled force limits.
  • Fast-stop & obstacle detection to prevent crush, draw-in or impact hazards.
  • Manual release for emergency egress during power loss.
  • Risk assessments & signage at handover, plus user training.

Choosing a competent installer is not optional—compliance protects people, property and liability.

Power, Backup & Sustainability

  • Mains-powered motors deliver reliable duty cycles for homes and busy sites.
  • Battery backup keeps gates operable in a power cut; systems default to a safe state.
  • Solar-assisted gates (site-dependent) are ideal for remote entrances, reducing trenching costs and carbon impact.
  • Low-energy operators and LED safety lights cut running costs.

The Autogate Ltd Installation Process

  1. Site Survey & Consultation
Measurements, ground conditions, fall (slope), wind exposure and services are checked. You’ll discuss usage patterns, aesthetics and access preferences.
  2. Design & Specification
Door type, leaf dimensions, posts, foundations, motor class (residential vs commercial), safety devices and control logic are specified. You receive a clear, itemised quotation.
  3. Groundworks & Foundations
Posts or pillars are set, ducts for power/controls are laid, and (for sliders) track or cantilever foundations are prepared.
  4. Fabrication & Finish
Gates are built to size with chosen infill, hinges or rollers, galvanising and powder-coating or timber treatment.
  5. Mechanical Install & Commissioning
Operators, control panels and safety devices are fitted. Opening/closing limits, forces and obstacle detection are calibrated.
  6. Integration & Handover
Intercoms, app access and schedules are set up. You receive training, manuals and a maintenance plan.

A professional handover ensures smooth operation from day one—and confidence that your system is safe.

Planning, Legalities & Boundaries

  • Planning permission: Many domestic gates are permitted development, but height, listed status or proximity to roads can change requirements. Autogate Ltd advises case-by-case.
  • Highways considerations: Gates opening onto public highways must not obstruct pavements or carriageways.
  • Boundaries & neighbours: For sliding gates, ensure you own the land along the run-back; allow for servicing space and drainage.
  • Data & privacy: If using CCTV or ANPR, align with data protection rules and display fair-use signage where relevant.

Lifecycle Care — Servicing and Repairs

Like any machine, electric gates need routine maintenance:

  • Biannual servicing (typical residential) checks hinges/rollers, fixings, motor torque, limit settings and safety devices.
  • Lubrication & tensioning where required to reduce wear and noise.
  • Firmware & app updates to maintain security and stability.
  • 24/7 call-out options available for critical commercial entrances.
  • Parts availability from recognised manufacturers to minimise downtime.

Well-maintained gates run quietly, consume less energy and remain compliant for years.

Choosing the Right System — Quick Checklist

  • Space & slope: Swing vs sliding vs bi-fold.
  • Duty cycle: Residential, shared driveway, or high-traffic commercial.
  • Security level: Solid infill, height, anti-lift brackets, lock status sensing.
  • Safety package: Photocells + edges + force limits fully tested.
  • Controls: From simple remotes to GSM/video intercoms and ANPR.
  • Aesthetics & finish: Match architecture—modern minimalist, classic wrought-iron, timber or mixed materials.
  • Aftercare: Confirm service plans, warranties and response times.

Autogate Ltd will walk you through each decision so you get the right balance of performance, style and budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) What happens in a power cut?
Your system includes a manual release and can be specified with battery backup. Gates either remain secure or can be set to fail-safe, depending on site strategy.

2) Do I need new gates to add automation?
Not always. If the structure and hinges are sound—and geometry suits automation—retrofit gate automation may be possible. A survey confirms suitability and safety upgrades.

3) Are sliding gates more secure than swing gates?
Both can be highly secure when correctly specified. Sliders resist ramming and wind better; swings provide a classic look and simpler mechanics. Site conditions decide.

4) How noisy are electric gates?
Quality operators are quiet. Proper hinges/rollers, alignment and servicing keep operation smooth and near-silent.

5) How long does installation take?
Groundworks and fabrication are the main variables. Many residential installs complete within a few days on site, following design and manufacturing lead times.

Automatic Gates – Enhancing Safety, Privacy, and Style with AutoGate Ltd

Every homeowner or business owner wants their property to be secure, private, and visually appealing. One of the smartest ways to achieve this balance is by installing automatic gates. These systems are designed not only to provide top-level security but also to bring elegance, convenience, and modern technology into everyday life.

At AutoGate Ltd, we specialise in offering customised automated gate solutions across the UK. Whether you need a secure entrance for a residential property or a professional system for a commercial site, automatic gates are the perfect blend of practicality and design.

Why Security Comes First

In today’s world, property crime is a concern for many families and businesses. Traditional gates provide some level of deterrent, but they can often be forced open or left unlocked. Automatic gates solve these issues by combining robust construction with high-tech features.

  • Heavy-duty frames and reinforced panels provide strength.
  • Automated locks ensure the gate cannot be left open by mistake.
  • CCTV and intercom integration adds an extra layer of monitoring.
  • Custom access codes and keycards restrict entry to authorised people only.

This makes automatic gates an effective way to secure everything from vehicles to sensitive business equipment.

Privacy for Families and Businesses

Privacy is just as important as security. Many homeowners do not want passers-by looking directly into their driveways or gardens. With tall, stylish automatic gates, you control who can see and access your property.

For businesses, privacy reduces distractions and keeps operations professional. A closed gate separates the outside world from your workspace, ensuring only staff and invited visitors gain entry.

Everyday Convenience

One of the most appreciated features of automatic gates is convenience. Manually opening heavy gates can be frustrating, especially in the UK’s rainy winters. Automatic systems remove this hassle:

  • Remote controls let you open and close the gate without leaving your car.
  • Smartphone apps allow full control from anywhere in the world.
  • Timed settings let you schedule opening and closing hours for commercial sites.
  • Voice control with smart home assistants like Alexa makes operation effortless.

This level of convenience means you gain time, comfort, and peace of mind every day.

A Boost to Property Value

Installing an automatic gate is also a long-term investment. Estate agents often highlight automated entrances as a premium feature that attracts buyers. Properties with secure, well-designed gates command higher prices and leave a strong impression during viewings.

Whether you are selling your home soon or planning to stay for years, an automatic gate system enhances the overall value of your property.

Different Types of Automatic Gates

How to Set up Softwood/Hardwood Driveway Gates

INSTALL A DRIVEWAY GATE

Entrances hold security and grace at the front of your home. They stop unwanted visitors from easily entering your premises. Gates can come with either automatic openers or be manually operated, depending on your choice. Combined with a barrier, you can create a secure area for pets and children that extends beyond the bounds of your back garden. This blog deals with manual setup. For electric gates, it is always advisable to contact and employ a skilled installer.

contact us at 01420 487700 for consultations.

A wooden driveway gate requires protection – either through staining and treatment or using appropriate outdoor paint. Here you will learn about how to attach the driveway gate to existing posts or pillars.

STRENGTHENING THE DRIVEWAY GATE

Considering the view of the gate from the rear and the positioning of gate hardware is important. The strength and durability of the driveway gate depends on its frame and rear structural reinforcement. Properly hanging the gate is essential. If your new gate features a structural brace design ensure that you hang it correctly. (Depending on the gate design, certain variations might feature an inverted “V” pattern on each leaf. If so, you can hang it on either side).

As the hinges are located at the rear, the driveway gate would swing inward toward the property. If an outward opening is needed, place the hinges at the gate’s front. Please note: opening a gate onto a motorway or pavement is prohibited. If such an opening is required, make sure there’s enough space to do it.

THE PROCESS OF INSTALLING A DRIVEWAY GATE

First, ensure that you have the minimum required clearance for the proper functioning of driveway gates. The opening must be at least 40mm (1 1/2″) wider than the gate. The clearance gap amounts to 15mm per side (from post or pillar edge to gate edge) and 10mm at the centre (to facilitate gate opening). If your measurement exceeds 40mm, subtract 10mm from the centre and divide the remainder by two to determine the gap on each side.

Select the appropriate hinges. We recommend and sell adjustable hinges. They simplify gate installation and allow adjustments to gate positioning without removing it. If you purchase hinges from us, you will receive 4 x hinges (either 24″, 36″, or 48″ depending on gate size).

INSTALLING THE GATE HINGES

Position the hinge on the horizontal structural brace (place hinges on top and bottom). For aesthetic purposes, centre the hinges. Mark the holes, then remove the hinge, Drill pilot holes for screws. Start by drilling a pilot hole using a 3mm drill bit. Gradually increase the size. To prevent wood from splitting as you do this, drill halfway on each side following the guide hole created by the 3mm drill.

Attach the eye bolt to the hinge. One bolt and washer should flank either side of the hinge’s edge.

MARKING THE HINGE PLATES

Subsequently, take the hinge plate, place it onto the eye bolt, and determine the distance from ground level to the bottom of the hinge plate. Add the ground clearance gap (25mm to 50mm). Now mark the post at the hinge plate’s bottom position. Repeat the procedure for the top of the hinge. Place the hinge plate on the post, mark the holes, remove it, drill pilot holes, and secure it in place using screws.

After attaching both hinge plates to the post, use a straight edge (a long piece of timber, possibly two combined) to span the opening. Position a level across it and mark the hinge plate positions on the opposite post. Mark the holes and attach the hinge plates.

HANG THE GATES

With the assistance of a second person, lift the gate onto the hinge plates.

Once both sides are suspended, adjust the hinges using the two bolts to align the height and sides. Each side should have an identical gap width, with the centre gap measuring 10mm. This process might require some time for precision. The gate should now swing freely when opening and closing.

ATTACHING GATE HARDWARE

RING LATCH

Comprising five components, the ring latch includes a connected rectangle bar, ring latch, 2 x bar catches, and stainless steel bar. If observing the gate’s rear, with inward opening, position the ring latch with the rectangle bar on the gate’s rear. For outward opening, affix it to the gate’s front.

Place the ring latch on the brace, allowing the rectangle bar to extend 50mm from the gate’s edge. Mark the holes, remove the latch, and drill pilot holes. At this point, you should have four holes. Use a ruler to draw a cross to determine the centre. This is where the stainless steel bar connects to the ring latch (on both sides). Drill a pilot hole all the way through the gate with a 3mm drill bit. Gauge the thickness of the stainless steel bar and select a slightly larger drill bit to create a hole for the bar’s free rotation. Screw the ring latch onto the gate and insert the bar.

Next, slide the holding catch over the rectangle bar, mark the position, remove it, drill pilot holes, and secure it in place.

Proceed to the gate’s opposite side. Connect the ring latch to the stainless steel bar, mark the holes, remove the latch, drill pilot holes, and then screw it in place.

Close the gate. Position the catch on the other gate, allowing the ring latch to close onto it. Mark the holes, remove the catch, drill pilot holes, and attach it to the post.

BRENTON BOLT

Select the location (typically best suited atop the gate). Centre it on the horizontal brace for aesthetics, mark the holes, remove the bolt, drill pilot holes, and secure it in place. For added security, use a padlock.

DROP BOLTS

Drop bolts assist in securing the driveway gate in either the open or closed position. Each drop bolt must be affixed to the vertical edge opposite the hinge side (toward the centre of both gates). Position them, mark the holes, remove them, pilot drill the holes, and secure them. With the gate closed, release the drop bolt until it contacts the floor. Indicate the position by outlining a circle around the bolt. Open the gate to facilitate access.

Next, measure the bolt’s diameter and select a slightly larger drill bit. Set your drill to “hammer” mode. Drill a hole just beyond the required depth. Exercise caution during this step and ensure no services run beneath! Once completed, confirm and repeat the procedure on the other side.

Fully open the gates to your desired position. Duplicate the above procedure to secure the gate in the open position.

And that’s the process! Your driveway gate is now successfully installed!
